BIOGRAPHY
Dean Malone was born in Somerset, England in August 1988 and gained an interest in design from working at his fathers leather business at the age of 16. It was a commercial company that supplied UK high street brands such as, John Lewis, Next and Marks and Spencers with there leather garments and accessories.
This headstart into the backgrounds of the commercial design industry was a skill set that Dean had acquired without any recognition and without realising it this helped Dean to design in a very practical and constructive way. Dean knew how a garment went together and all the components that were involved in making it, but by the age of 18 when he had completed an Art foundation he found commercial designing extremely restrictive.
Dean decided to apply for University places in Fashion Design and was accepted at the University of Westminster, which was his first choice. Westminster gave him a much stronger insight in to the fashion world and how incredibly free you could be with your design process, anything was possible and he soon gained a very strong interest in pattern cutting. The ability to be able to dissect a garment and reconstruct it in whatever way you desired really appealed to Dean and with access to some of the best lecturers in the country at Westminster Dean learnt as much or as little as he wanted about each fashion process.
Dean's passion for sport meant that he was very interested in muscular anatomy and how the body moved in a garment. There had to be practicality to a garment but at the same time it had to posses a certain beauty that came from adding small design features, such as panelling in different fabrics that wouldn't necessarily be used in a practical garment.
Dean Graduated from Westminster in 2011 and took his first job opportunity at Abercrombie and Fitch In Columbus, OHIO USA. Dean was placed in mens denim at A&F and has gone on to build a great deal of knowledge about this area of the commercial clothing industry. His strongest interest in denim lays in the history of denim and how denim ages through wear. Dean also loves how the denim industry is has the ability to develop such a wide variety od incredible denim at the moment. From the most novel ideas, such as scratch and sniff denim, that Naked and Famous brought in to the market, to turbotech denim, from Hudson, which is a raw jean that breaks in, in only 6 months of wear.
